Sub-shrubs is a category name which causes some confusion but is basically low-growing shrubby perennials that have a woody base and soft top. Some may die back to the base in winter. More plants than we realise are technically sub-shrubs, especially in coastal planting: Ceanothus, Phlomis fruiticosa, rosemary, lavender and Perovskia are typical sub-shrubs. They play an important part in the coastal plant palette and feature strongly in our selections.
